Staff, Board & Volunteers
Bill Paxton, LMSW, MM - President
Bill Paxton has over 35 years of management experience in non-profit organizations where he has worked primarily in behavioral health field. Most recently he has provided training and consultation services to organizations through his own company, Paxton Change Solutions.
Bill obtained an undergraduate degree (education) from Calvin College, and masters degrees from both Michigan State University (MSW) and Aquinas College (MM). He has specialized training in change management and as a coach.
Prior to his affiliation with HIS Bill worked at Family Service Association of Kent County, Project Rehab, Hope Network, as President of Pathfinder Resources, and most recently Director of Northern Michigan Services for Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.
Bill is a sought after speaker for State and local conferences primarily in change and coping with stress. He has also taught at Calvin College and Grand Valley State University, School of Social Work. Bill has served on numerous community task forces.
Bill and his wife, Judy, have been married for over 40 years, and have three daughters, two sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. For the past nine years they have lived in Traverse City where they were both active in their church. They plan to return to First Christian Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, where they were members for 30 years prior to their relocation to Traverse City.
Laura VanderMolen, DO - Medical Director
Dr. Laura VanderMolen has been with HIS since September 2001 after returning from medical mission work in Peru. As the only physician on staff, Laura serves as the primary doctor for many of our patients and recruits and provides oversight for the volunteer physicians and nurses at the clinic. Laura was raised in Baltimore Maryland and attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan.
After receiving her medical degree from Kirkville College of Osteopathic Medicine she completed her residency in Grand Rapids. She is board certified in Pediatrics and Internal Medicine.
Laura and her husband Kirk are the parents of four children and attend Madison Square Christian Reformed Church.
Daniel Armstrong, DDS - Dental Director
Daniel began volunteering at HIS in June 2013 and accepted a position as a staff dentist later that year. Daniel previously worked for Mel Trotter Ministries, Cherry Street Health Services, and Family Health Center in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Daniel attended Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids Community College, Grand Valley State University, and the University of Michigan, receiving a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2009. He completed an additional twelve-month training program at the University of Michigan Health System focusing on care for the mentally handicapped, those with complex medical conditions, and hospital inpatients.
Daniel married Brianna De Leeuw in 2009 and welcomed his firstborn son in November 2014. They attend Forest Hills Bible Chapel in Ada, Michigan. He enjoys music, playing the guitar, singing. He is an avid fan of Jet's Pizza and chocolate chip cookies.
