About Us
Health Intervention Services is a faith based, non-profit 501(c) 3, health care center serving the greater Grand Rapids area. HIS, located on Division near Burton, is founded on the belief that the intrinsic value of all people justifies the right to quality health services, spiritual care and other social resources that promote physical, emotional and spiritual wholeness. Since 1998, Health Intervention Services (HIS) has been providing health care to the uninsured and working poor. |
The clinic was founded by a group of physicians, nurses, ministers, social workers, and business persons who met to create what they called "a medical mission" in Grand Rapids. Services have expanded to now include comprehensive medical, dental, vision, specialty referrals, mental health counseling, medication assistance and spiritual care. HIS also collaborates with other community organizations and educational institutions for additional services. The number of HIS employees is few but they are joined by numerous volunteer medical professionals and volunteers from the community.More than half of HIS staff members are bilingual, facilitating treatment for our patients who speak only Spanish. Unique and essential to HIS' ministry is a Chaplain who offers prayer, comfort, spiritual counsel and Spanish interpretation. While spiritual counseling and prayer comfort is offered, refusing that service does not preclude anyone from receiving health care services. HIS respects each patient regardless of their personal beliefs and welcomes all uninsured people in need of health care. All of HIS' patients are medically uninsured and do not qualify for most government programs even though many are living near the poverty level. Various reasons such as temporary unemployment, working several pert-time jobs, working low wage jobs or being self-employed makes health insurance cost prohibitive. The patients willingly pay for services on a sliding income scale. |
